CELEBRATING THE SPIRIT OF INDEPENDENCE & THE CULTURE OF LIVE MUSIC & COMMUNITY
Independent Venue Week (IVW) is a 7-day celebration of music venues around the country and a nod to the people that own, run, work and play in them, week in, week out.
Run in the UK by CAN YOU CIC IT?, the initiative has successfully championed and celebrated venues all around the UK, with huge support from venues, artists, promoters, crew, media and gig goers.
BBC 6 Music are our official broadcast partner with Steve Lamacq taking his 4pm – 7pm show on the road for a live tour across the week around the country.
The celebration very quickly became a firm fixture in the music industry calendar and has run consecutively for 8 years in the UK, starting on the last Monday of January. Since 2018, IVW has run just after the 4th July, through our partners, Marauder.
These invaluable venues give artists their first experience of playing live in front of an audience, often inspiring the next generation of musicians.
They give fans somewhere to get up close to those artists that one day, may well be playing stadiums and festival main stages.
They also provide those wanting a career in music, off the stage, the chance to learn their craft up close in a small venue.
By championing these venues, we highlight why they are so much more than just places for live music – they are cultural hubs for learning, creativity, arts and culture more widely, connecting people in their local community of all ages, backgrounds, abilities, genders, skills and walks of life.
These venues, mostly small, local, independently owned businesses, are the backbone of the live music scene and bring additional financial benefit to their local economy.
Independent Venue Week recognises all that they have done to create some of the most memorable nights of the past so they can continue to do the same in the future.
